As the leaves continue to fall, chilly winds blow in and kids start to fantasize about snow days, it is time to prepare your home for the winter. Some of these checklist items can save your pipes and some will save your cash–both something we are thankful for in the winter!

Thank you to our favorite inspector, Nick Stanisic, from Coastal Home Inspections for his expertise and checklist:

Exterior

  • Check the roof for any roof damage and make necessary repairs if needed.

  • Clean all gutters from leaf debris.

  • Check all downspouts to drain away from the home approximately 10 feet.

  • Grade the exterior away from the foundation.

  • Shut off the interior hose bibb valves, remove hoses, and drain water. If needed, install an insulated exterior cover.

  • Seal all cracks and holes for better heating and air-conditioning efficiency and to prevent pests and insects from entering the home.

  • Seal and paint windows and doors.

  • Cut tree branches and vines touching the home.

  • Rake leaves and debris from the lawn.

  • Winterize the lawn irrigation system.

  • Store outdoor furniture away from the elements.

  • Check snow shovels and snowblowers to ensure they are in good shape for the winter and accessible.

Interior

  • Service heating systems.

  • Change all mechanical filters.

  • Clean and inspect the fireplace and flues.

  • Clean dryer vents.

  • Check and or replace smoke/carbon monoxide alarms. These should be changed every 10 years.

  • Descale tankless water heaters.

  • Change the rotation of the ceiling fans to be clockwise in the wintertime.

  • Change all remote control batteries.

  • Have flashlights and spare batteries available.

  • Make an escape plan for emergencies.

We are here to help if you have any questions or need any vendor recommendations to help complete your winter checklist items.
